Brent Carbonell is a graduate from the University of Strathclyde, holding a MSc with Distinction in the School of Social Work and Social Policy’s Child and Youth Care Studies program. He is a certified Child and Youth Care Professional (CYC-P) and serves as a consultant and instructor with Cornell University’s Residential Child Care Project (RCCP). Since entering the CYC field in 2009, Brent has held various roles, including direct care provider, team lead, program manager, training manager, and director.

Between 2016 and 2023, Brent actively contributed to capacity development initiatives in collaboration with multiple Indigenous communities along the coast of Labrador. He collaborated closely with Indigenous leaders, band councils, social health staff, and care providers to facilitate the realization of each community’s vision to own and operate regulated child welfare organizations.

Throughout his post-graduate studies, Brent focused on action-oriented critical research, emphasizing culturally appropriate and inclusive access to employment, education, and government-funded services for vulnerable and racialized populations in Canada. As a dedicated Child and Youth Care professional, an educator specializing in trauma-informed crisis intervention, and a researcher in the area of cultural safety, Brent brings valuable insights, skills, and knowledge to his CYC practice. His expertise is particularly evident in his commitment to promoting inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility, and Indigenous rights.
